Tom Petty Books New York, Los Angeles Residencies Among Summer Tour Dates

It was previously announced that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers would be headlining a few festivals this year, including Bonnaroo, Firefly and the Hangout Festival. Now he has filled out his upcoming tour schedule with a slew of North American dates, including multiple night residencies in New York and Los Angeles.

The first date on the tour will be at the Bayou Music Center in Houston, and he will play a gig at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. on May 16 before the Hangout Music Festival kicks off the following day in Gulf Shores, Ala.

After that, Petty will take up a five-night intimate residency at the Beacon Theatre in New York May 20-21, 23 and 25-26. The L.A. residency will then be held at the Fonda Theatre on June 3-4, 6, and 8-9.

But the tour won’t stop there. Petty will also appear in Noblesville, Ind. (June 15), London, Ontario (June 18), Pittsburgh (June 20), Saratoga Springs, N.Y. (June 23), Milwaukee (June 28) and Minneapolis (June 29).

The capacity for the Beacon Theatre is 2,800, while the Fonda Theatre only sits 1,300. Both are a big departure from the arenas and amphitheaters Petty and the Heartbreakers usually play.

There’s no word yet on why Petty chose this year to take the band out, as he has no music scheduled to be released before the end of the year. However, the group is reported to be working on a new album that will be released next year.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers haven’t put out a studio album since 2010’s Mojo. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Before that, the band hadn’t released an album since 2002’s The Last DJ, though Petty did put out a solo album in 2006 called Highway Companion.
