morrissey Biography
Morrissey, the English lyricist and singer, was born on May 22, 1959 in Davyhulme, Lancashire. During the 1980s, he became prominent as the vocalist and lyricist for The Smiths, an alternative rock band. In the UK the band was very successful. However in 1987 they broke up and Morrissey launched his solo career. He has made the top ten on the UK Singles Chart ten times. Morrissey is widely regarded as one of most important innovators of indie music.
In March 1988 Morrissey released, “Viva Hate,” his first solo album. In November 1993, the RIAA certified the album Gold. His followup set, “Kill Uncle,” was released in 1991 and peaked in the No. 8 spot on the UK music charts. The 1992 set “Your Arsenal” was nominated for a Grammy Award as Best Alternative Album and peaked in the No. 4 spot on the UK music charts. “Vauxhall and I” was released in 1994 and reached No. 1 in the UK. Morrissey has released a total of 9 solo albums, with the latest being “Years of Refusal” released in 2009.
The lyrics of Morrissey are funny, bleak, dramatic vignettes about lonely nightclubs, doomed relationships and burdens of the past. He is well known for dynamic live performances, his quiff haircut and having a unique baritone style, although for emphasis he does sometimes use falsetto. His contrarian and forthright opinions, particularly when it comes to race, have led to many media controversies. Morrissey is also an animal rights and vegetarianism advocate.
