Celine Dion, the Canadian songwriter, singer, entrepreneur and actress, was born on March 30, 1968 in Charlemagne, Quebec. Dion became a teen star of the French-speaking world when Rene Angelil, future husband and manager, mortgaged his house in order to finance Dion's first album. She released “Unison,” an English language album, in 1990 and established herself as a pop star in both North America as well as other parts of the English-speaking world.

Dion's first international recognition came during the 1980s. She won the Yamaha World Popular Song Festival in 1982 and the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988. During the early 1980s she recorded several French albums. In 1986, she signed with CBS Records Canada.

During the 1990s, Dion achieved worldwide fame, with help from Angelil, after she signed on with Epic Records. She released several English sets along with more French albums to become one of pop music history's most successful artists. In 1999, however, at the peak of her success, she announced she was taking a break from performing to start a family. Her husband was also battling cancer. In 2002, Dion returned to pop music and signed a three year contract (which became extended to nearly five years) to perform a five star nightly theatrical show in Las Vegas at the Caesars Palace Colosseum.

The music of Celine Dion is influenced by a wide range of genres, including rock, gospel, R&B and classical. Her releases frequently have received mixed critical responses. However she is well known for her powerful and technically skilled vocals. She is the all-time top selling Canadian artist and for the era of Nielsen SoundScan is the second top selling female artist for the U.S. Also “D'eux,” her 1995 album, is the all time, top selling French language set. During the 2004 World Music Awards Dion received the Chopard Diamond Award for surpassing 175 worldwide million album sales and becoming the all time top selling female artist.
