wilco Biography

Wilco, the alternative rock band, was formed in 1994 and is based out of Chicago, Illinois. The group was formed by members of Uncle Tupelo, an alternative country group, after singer Jay Farrar left the band. The lineup of Wilco has frequently changed. The only original members are bassist John Stirratt and singer Jeff Tweedy. Other current members, who have been with the group since early 2004, include drummer Glenn Kotche, multi-instrumentalists Mikael Jorgensen and Pat Sansone and guitarist Nels Cline.

Wilco has released three collaborations, one live double album and seven studio albums. A wide variety of musical styles and artists have inspired Wilco's music, including Television and Bill Fay. In turn Wilco's music has influenced several alternative rock bands. Wilco continued with Uncle Tupelo's alternative country on “A.M.,” their debut album released in 1995. Since that time more experimental aspects have been introduced into their music, including classic pop and alternative rock elements.

Wilco began to receive media attention after releasing “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot,” their fourth album, in 2002, along with the controversy that surrounded the set. After completing the recording sessions, the album was rejected by Reprise Records who also dismissed Wilco from their record label. Reprise as part of their buy out deal, gave Wilco album rights for free. Wilco, after streaming “Foxtrot” from their website, in 2002 sold the set to Nonesuch Records. To date “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” is the most successful release from Wilco and has sold more than 670,000 copies. “A Ghost Is Born,” Wilco's fifth album released in 2004, won two Grammys, including the award for Best Alternative Music Album. In June 2009 “Wilco (The Album),” Wilco's seventh set, was released.
