The American recording artist, entrepreneur and actress Madonna was born as Madonna Louise Ciccone on August 16, 1958 in Bay City Michigan. She moved in 1977 to New York City in order to pursue a modern dance career. She performed in the groups Emmy and Breakfast Club. In 1983 Madonna released her first album. Her followup albums brought her immense popularity. She pushed the lyrical content boundaries of mainstream popular music as well as imagery for music videos. Madonna also became an MTV fixture. She has had many number one hit singles throughout her career, including “4 Minutes,” “Hung Up,” “Music,” “Frozen,” “Vogue,” “Like a Prayer” “Papa Don't Preach” and “Like a Virgin.” Madonna has been praised by critics for the diversity of her musical productions which have also seen her embroiled in religious controversy.

Madonna has also worked as an actress since 1979. She received critical acclaim as well as the Best Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy Golden Globe Award for her leading role in the 1996 film Evita.” However other film roles have received harsh feedback. Other ventures of Madonna's include producer film director, children's book writer and fashion designer.

Madonna has sold over 300 million worldwide records. The Guinness World Records recognizes her as the all time best selling woman recording artist in the world. She is the top selling female rock recording artist, according to RIAA, in the 20th century as well as second best selling U.S. female artist, trailing only Barbra Streisand. In 2008 Madonna became a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
