fleetwood mac Biography

The British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac was formed in London in 1967. Drummer Mick Fleetwood is the band's only original band member currently with the group. Peter Green founded the band and named it by combining the last names of two former John Mayall's Bluesbreakers band mates (Mac Fleetwood and John McVie). However bassist John McVie didn't play at the band's first concert or on Fleetwood Mac's first single. Fleetwood Mac released their self-titled debut album in 1968. Christine McVie, the band's keyboardist, has played on all of the band's albums except two. She also did the artwork for “Kiln House.”

Fleetwood Mac has had two successful periods. The first came as part of the British blues boom of the late 1960s when guitarist Peter Green led the band. The second period of 1975-87 saw the band achieve enormous worldwide success with a lineup that featured Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie.

In 1975, the band released “Fleetwood Mac.” The album was the band's breakthrough success. The set sold more than 5 million copies and in the U.S. reached No. 1. Hit singles off the set included “Say You Love Me” and “Over My Head” by Christine McVie and “Landslide” and “Rhiannon” by Stevie Nicks. The 1977 album “Rumors,” the second Fleetwood Mac set after Buckingham and Nicks joined the band, spawned four Top 10 U.S. singles- “Go Your Own Way,” “Dreams,” “You Make Loving Fun” and “Don't Stop”. The set was No. 1 for 31 weeks on the U.S. albums chart. “Rumors” to date has sold more than 40 million worldwide copies and is the all-time 9th highest selling album.
