train Biography

The American pop band Train was formed in 1994 in San Francisco, California. Current band members include Scott Underwood (percussion, drums), Jimmy Stafford (vocals, guitar) and Patrick Monahan (vocalist). The original line-up also included Charlie Colin and Rob Hotchkiss. In 1998 the band released their self-titled debut album and achieved mainstream success. The album spawned the hit single "Meet Virginia," which peaked in the No. 20 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

"Drops of Jupiter," their second album released in 2001, spawned the hit song "Drops of Jupiter." The album peaked in the No. 6 spot on Billboard's 200 chart. In 2002 the band won Grammys for the song: Best Arrangement and Best Rock Song. In both Canada and the United States "Drops of Jupiter" was certified double platinum. To date it is Train's best-selling album.

In 2003 the band released "My Private Nation," Train's third studio album. In the U.S. the album was certified platinum, and spawned the hit single "Calling All Angels." The song was Train's third hit single to reach the top 20 and was certified gold. "When I Look to the Sky," the second single, was also a hit. "Ordinary," a non-album song" was featured in "Spider-Man 2." The last single released off "My Private Nation," "Get to Me," reached the No. 9 spot on Billboard's Adult Top 40 chart.

Colin and Hotchkiss left the band before they released "For Me It's You," Train's fourth album, in 2006. Brandon Bush played keyboards and Johnny Colt played bass. The album received positive reviews from critics, however was commercially unsuccessful. The band went on hiatus for three years.

Train released "Save Me, San Francisco," in 2009. The album spawned three hit singles: "Marry Me," "If It's Love" and "Hey, Soul Sister" (which was certified 5x platinum and became an international hit). The album was certified gold and sold 954,000 copies. Since 2008 Jerry Becker (guitar, keyboards) and Hector Maldonado (percussion, guitar, vocals, bass) have been recording and touring with Train. In April 2012 Train released "California 37," the band's sixth studio album.
