tori amos Biography

The American singer-songwriter and pianist Tori Amos was born on August 22, 1963 in Newton, North Carolina. During the early 1990s, she was one of the leading female singer-songwriters, and in the early part of her career was noteworthy for being one of just a few performers of alternative rock to use the piano as the primary instrument. Amos' charting singles include “1000 Oceans,” “Spark,” “Professional Widow,” “Caught a Lite Sneeze,” “Cornflake Girl,” “God,” “Silent All These Years,” “Crucify” and “A Sorta Fairytale.”

Amos released her debut album, “Little Earthquakes,” in 1992. The set recounted her sexual awakening, religious upbringing, sexual assault and struggling to establish an identity. In 1994, she released “Under the Pink,” her second album, to favorable reviews and charted at No. 12 on Billboard's 200 chart. To date, Amos has released 11 studio albums. Her 12th set, “Night of Hunters,” is scheduled to be released in September 2011. She has also released 30 singles and contributed to nine movie soundtracks, including 1995's “Higher Learning,” 1998's “Great Expectations” and 2000's “Mission Impossible II.”

Amos has sold, through 2005, 12 million worldwide albums. She has received 10 Grammy Award nominations. In 1996, People Magazine named her was on of their “50 Most Beautiful People.” A 2003 poll by Rolling Stone Magazine named Amos as the No. 5 all-time top live acts.
