the wiggles Biography
The children's group The Wiggles was formed in 1991 in Sydney, Australia. Original members consisted of Jeff Fatt, Greg Page, Murray Cook, Phillip Wilcher and Anthony Field. After the group's first album, Wilcher left. Page had to leave in 2006 due to illness. Understudy Sam Moran replaced him.
During the 1980s Fatt and Field were members of The Cockroaches, an Australian pop band. Cook belonged to several bands as well before he met Page and Field at Macquarie University. They were all studying to be pre-school teachers. In 1991, a school project resulted in them recording their debut album and going on tour. The group combines child development theories and music in their live shows, television programs and videos. Since the formation of the group other regular characters, including Wags the Dog, Henry the Octopus, Dorothy the Dinosaur and Captain Feathersword as well as The Wiggly Dancers troupe have toured with the group and made appearances on their television programs, DVDs and CDs.
The Wiggles' concepts have been franchised to other countries, with Wiggles sections being developed in US and Australian amusement parks. The group has also won numerous recording industry awards and achieved worldwide success via their concerts, television series, videos and children's albums. For four consecutive years the Wiggles were the top earning entertainers in Australia according to Business Review Weekly. The group has sold over 4 million CDs and over 17 million DVDs and had 10 multi-platinum, 3 double-platinum, 12 platinum and 17 gold albums.
