The Canadian singer, songwriter and musician Sarah McLachlan was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on January 28, 1968. She is well known for her mezzo-soprano vocal range and emotional ballads. As of 2006, McLachlan has sold more than 40 million worldwide albums. Her best selling album is Surfacing, which was released in 1997. The set was nominated for four Juno Awards and four Grammy Awards and won two Grammys. McLachlan is also the founder of Lilith Fair, a tour which showcases female musicians. The tour ran from 1997-1999 and also in summer 2010.
McLachlan singed with Nettwerk, an independent record label based in Vancouver, and recorded Touch, her first album, in 1988. The set received both commercial and critical success and spawned the hit single Vox. She released Solace in 1991 which spawned the hit singles Into the Fire and The Path of Thorns (Terms). She also began collaborating with Pierre Marchand on Solace. Marchand has produced all of her albums since and has also co-written some of McLachlan's songs.
McLachlan released Fumbling Towards Ecstasy in 1993. In 1997 she released Surfacing, which to date is her best selling album. The set has sold more than 11 million worldwide copies and won four Juno Awards and two Grammys. McLachlan launched Lilith Fair tour in 1997. McLachlan's song Angel appeared in the film City of Angels in 1998. The soundtrack made it to No. 1 on Billboard's chart.
McLachlan then went on hiatus. Her next album Afterglow was released in 2003 and spawned the singles World On Fire, Stupid and Fallen. She released a Christmas album called Wintersong in 2006 and in 2010 she released Laws of Illusion.
