Frequently Asked Questions
What songs will Ryan Adams play in concert?
Ryan Adams has a fascinating breadth of material from which he can pull his setlist: from his traditional rotating door of different genre covers, to his work with some famous bands in both the punk/metal world and the folk world.
The main element to Adams’ setlist is his solo material, and he gives a fair share of that to his solo debut, Heartbreaker. Released in 2001, the album was critically acclaimed and garnered a massive new following for the musician. It is represented with close to four songs per evening, including “My Winding Wheel” and “Oh My Sweet Carolina.” “Come Pick Me Up” was taken off the setlist for a few years, but fan outcry and the song’s longevity has brought it back, usually as the closing or penultimate song of the tour.
Ryan Adams also adds plenty of material from his 2011 release, Ashes & Fire. It was hugely popular, and “Dirty Rain” as well as “Do I Wait” are setlist standards, and he sometimes performs “I Love You But I Don’t Know What to Say.” As far as his solo material goes, he rarely steps outside these two main albums, sometimes dropping a sole song from Love is Hell, which is either “Please Do Not Let Me Go” or “English Girls Approximately.”

How about any band-related material?
Ryan Adams has been an active part in a number of bands, both extremely popular and, not very popular at all. The two groups with the most likeliness of seeing a nod to from Adams on his solo tour is Whiskeytown and The Cardinals.
Whiskeytown is no longer active, and the group is omitted entirely from any setlists. But, considering they have been defunct since 2001 and Adams is way past that group with solo and other projects, it isn’t all too much of a surprise.
Adams was a cofounder for The Cardinals, and was with the band for a number of their releases before leaving in 2009. He performs about seven songs from their catalog, including “Beautiful Sorta” from The Cardinals 2005 debut album, Cold Roses.
The group’s 2008 release, Cardinolgy, is probably the most represented, for it was their second to last release with Adams as frontman. Choice cuts include “Fix It” and “Magick.” Adams reserves “Crossed Out Name” from this album towards the end of the set.
Anything brand new?
Ryan Adams has a full-length album with a September 8, 2014 release. The self-titled album is largely ignored for this tour since most of the material is not widely known. Adams performs one song from the album, called “My Wrecking Ball.” It is not a cover of Miley Cyrus’ similarly titled hit, but a whole new song that sits right in the middle of the self-titled 2014 release. He has performs “Where I Meet You In My Mind” from the new album, but rarely performs both.
How about any cover songs?
Ryan Adams really has a bizarre setlist of material he runs with. He is a showman at heart, and includes covers of various genres in the mix. He is known to close his show with Alice in Chains’ largely acoustic number “Nutshell.” But he may switch that out with a performance of “Straight Ahead” by guitarist Greg Sage.
The one cover you can bank on hearing is Danzig’s “Mother.” This is Danzig’s most popular song following his stint as the frontman for legendary punk band, the Misfits.
How long is a Ryan Adams concert?
Ryan Adams has enough material to work with for a straight 24 hour performance. However, he chooses a slightly more approachable two hours of material every evening.

Concert Reviews
“What followed was a long, hilarious rant by Adams, who pointed out the obvious fact: if you wanted guitar solos, explosions, fancy lighting — or just drums, for that matter — you came to the wrong show. It was an intimate performance, with just the singer-songwriter and no band, playing stripped-down versions of his songs on acoustic guitar and piano.” – Michael Gallucci of the Cleveland Scene
“Adams took the stage a bit late, with an intimate set up affording him a chair, two guitars in the red, white and blue hues he favors, and a small upright piano. His attitude was that of a guy just hanging out in his living room, playing a few songs for a group of close friends, rather than that of a man playing to a near capacity crowd in an intimate, early 20th century theatre.” – Kris Embry of KDHX
“Ryan came out and went right to business. The Philadelphia crowd was much more vocal than the California audience (no shock there), but at least my wife and I were not sitting in front of a group of drunk girls. Ryan definitely mixed up the set list between shows (yes, he did play “Come Pick Me Up”, now we can all shut up about it).” – Joey Lombardi of Joey’s Blog
