ricky martin Biography
The Puerto Rican singer and actor Ricky Martin was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on December 24, 1971. He first achieved prominence while performing with Menudo, a Latin boy band. He launched his solo career in 1991.
Martin has sold over 60 million worldwide album over his career. He founded the charity non-profit organization Ricky Martin Foundation. Martin's “Livin' la Vida Loca” his exuberant single, made him into one of the prominent figures in Latin dance-pop. After performing with Menudo for five years he released “Ricky Martin,” a solo Spanish language album, in 1991. Martin also acted on Mexican TV and stage and became a modest star. He starred on “General Hospital,” the American soap opera, in 1994. He played a singer from Puerto Rico.
After releasing several Spanish language albums, in 1999 Martin released “Ricky Martin,” an English language album. The set included “Livin' la Vida Loca” the salsa-style song. That set brought international fame for Martin and 17 million copies were sold. Martin's other albums include 1995's “A Medio Vivir,” 1998's “Vuelve,” 2000's “Sound Loaded” (which included his hit single “She Bangs”) and 2005's “Life.” In 2008 he released “Ricky Martin 17,” his compilation album. Martin in 2010 announced himself as “a fortunate homosexual man,” which ended years of speculation by his fans.
Martin almost single handedly brought an international face to Latino music. His acclaimed performance during the 1999 Grammy Awards helped to launch Martin into a worldwide superstar.
Valentino and Matteo, Martin's twin sons, were born in 2008 through a surrogate mother. Martin is also the co-owner of Casa Salsa, a Miami restaurant. In 2007 Ricky Martin received his star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.
