red hot chili peppers Biography

The alternative rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers was formed in 1983 in Los Angeles. The current lineup of the band includes vocalist Anthony Kiedis, bassist Michael “Flea” Balzary, drummer Chad Smith and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer. The musical style of the group fuses traditional funk along with elements from other genres, including psychedelic rock and punk.

The original lineup of the group featured drummer Jack Irons and guitarist Hillel Slovak. In 1988 Slovak died from a heroin overdose, which also resulted in Irons leaving the band. For a brief time D.H. Peligro, former drummer of the Dead Kennedys, filled in for Irons before Smith became the new permanent drummer. Slovak was replaced with guitarist John Frusciante. That lineup recorded five albums, include 1989's “Mother's Milk,” 1991's “Blood Sugar Sex Magik,” 1999's “Californication,” 2002's “By the Way” and 2006's “Stadium Arcadium.”

The first commercial success for the band was “Blood Sugar Sex Magik,” which has sold more than thirteen million copies. In 1992 John Frusciante abruptly left the band right in the midst of touring. Guitarist Arik Marshall was recruited to finish the tour. Dave Navarro from Jane's Addiction was then employed for the band's 1995 set “One Hot Minute.” The album was commercially successful but didn't match the popular or critical claim that “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” had. Shortly after the release of the album Navarro left the group.

In 1998 Frusciante rejoined the band after coming out of drug rehab. The four reunited band members recorded “Californication.” The set was released in 1999 and has sold a total of fifteen million copies to make it the most commercially successful of the band's albums. Three years later in 2002 the band released “By the Way” and in 2006 “Stadium Arcadium,” a double album, was released. Following a world tour the Red Hot Chilli Peppers went on a long hiatus. Once again Frusciante left and Josh Klinghoffer became the new lead guitarist for the band. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold more than 55 million worldwide albums and won a total of seven Grammy Awards.
