The American musician, songwriter, singer and actor Prince was born as Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 7, 1958. During his career Prince has had thirty singles in the Top 40 and produced ten platinum albums. He has also founded a record label and recording studio, self produced his albums, and played all or most of the instruments that appear on his recordings. Prince has also promoted the careers of Vanity 6, The Time, Carmen Electra and Sheila E, and also written songs for those artists as well as others including Sinead O'Connor, The Bangles and Chaka Khan.

Prince has won an Academy Award, Golden Globe and seven Grammy Awards. In 2004, he became a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during his first year of eligibility. The music of Prince draws its inspiration from pop, jazz, folk, psychedelia, disco, electronica, New Wave, blues, rap, funk, soul, R&B and rock. Artistic influences of Prince's include Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Duke Ellington, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Miles Davis, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, The Beatles Joni Mitchell Parliament-Funkadelic and Sly & the Family Stone. The “Minneapolis sound” was pioneered by Prince. It combines New Wave, R&B, pop, rock and funk. Many musicians have been influenced by it. Prince has released over 30 albums over the course of his long career and sold 100 million worldwide records.
