The English boy band One Direction was established in 2010 in London. Band members include Zayn Mlik, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles and Liam Payne. One Direction signed with Syco Records, Simon Cowell's label, after they finished third on The X Factor television program. Subsequently the band signed with Columbia Records in North America.

The band rose to international prominence in early 2012 after releasing "Up All Night," their debut album. "What Makes You Beautiful," the lead single off the album, was commercially very successful and helped the album top the music charts all over the world. It was the first time that a British group's debut album had entered in the No. 1 spot on Billboard's 200 chart. "Live While We're Young" is the group's record-breaking first single off "Take Me Home," their second album scheduled to be released in November 2012. They are scheduled to embark on a world tour for a majority of 2013. One Direction, in addition to their music, has also supported several foundations and charitable causes. The group has also had commercial endorsements from Hasbro, HarperCollins, Nokia and Pokemon.

One Direction has helped to revive the concept of the boy band and have helped to form the new "British Invasion" of the U.S. The group has sold 12 million units. One Direction has won three MTV Video Music Awards and one BRIT Award. The group has generated $50 million with their combined music, touring and merchandising sales.

The musical style of One Direction is predominantly pop music, containing elements of rock, electropop, power pop, pop rock, dance pop and teen pop. Their pop harmonies have been compared with other boy bands like 98 Degrees, Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync.
