neil young Biography

The Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young was born in Toronto, Ontario on November 12, 1945. He is considered by many to be one of his generation's most influential musicians. In 1960 Young started to perform as a solo musician in Canada. In 1966 he moved to California and he and Stephen Stills founded Buffalo Springfield. Later Young joined the group Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1969 as the fourth member. Young has also had a very acclaimed and successful solo career. In 1968, he released his first album and has released 34 studio albums over the course of his 40 year career. Young was inducted twice as a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: in 1995 as a solo musician and in 1997 as a Buffalo Springfield member.

The music of Neil Young is known for his signature tenor/falsetto singing voice, deeply personal lyrics and distinctive guitar work. He also plays several other instruments, including harmonica and piano. His idiosyncratic clawhammer acoustic and electric guitar playing are distinct characteristics that define his melodic and varying ragged sound. Throughout his career Young has experimented using different music styles, including electronic music and swing. However he is best known for employing country rock and acoustic folk along with amplified hard rock while collaborating with his Crazy Horse band. In additional, Neil Young has also incorporated elements from grunge and alternative rock and other newer musical styles.

Neil Young has also been a co-director or director of several films under the alias of Bernard Shakey, including 1973's “Journey Through the Past,” 1979's “Rust Never Sleeps,” 1982's “Human Highway,” 2003's “Greendale” and 2008's CSNY/Deja Vu.”

Young is also involved in environmental causes and small farmer welfare. In 1985, he co-founded “Farm Aid,” a benefit concert for small farmers. In 1986 Young helped to establish The Bridge School, which helps children with severe physical and verbal disabilities.
