maxwell Biography

The American R&B musician Maxwell was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 23, 1973. He has been an influential figure in developing neo-soul, a sub genre of soul music.

During the early 1990s Maxwell started to work with Wah Wah Watson, a noted guitarist, and songwriter Leon Ware to record his debut album “Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite.” After the album had been completed, Columbia doubted its potential and for two years the set was shelved. Finally in 1996 the album was issued.

“Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite” drew its inspiration from classic soul music. At first the set didn't capture audience attention, until “Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder),” the second single, was released and became a hit. The set went on to receive a Grammy Award nomination and went double platinum. In 1998 Maxwell released “Embrya,” his second album. In 1999 he released the single “Fortunate.” It is Maxwell's most successful single to date. For 1999 it was Billboard's No. 1 R&B single. In 2001 Maxwell released “Now,” his third album. It was No. 1 on Billboard's 200 album chart as well as the R&B album chart. In 2009 Maxwell released “BLACKsummers'night.” It debuted on Billboard's 200 chart at No. 1. In 2011 “blackSUMMERS'snight,” a follow-up set, is scheduled to be released.
