matisyahu Biography

Matisyahu, the Hasidic Jewish reggae artist, was born in West Chester, PA on June 30, 1979. He is best known for merging Jewish traditional themes with beat-boxing hip hop, rock and reggae. His vocal style incorporates the hazzan style of Judaism’s songful prayer with jazz scat singing. “King Without a Crown” became a U.S. top 40 hit single. Matisyahu since 2004 has released two live albums, three studio albums, two live concert DVDs and two remix CDs. Throughout his career he has worked with Sly & Robbie, the reggae producers, and producer Bill Laswell.

Matisyahu released “Shake Off the Dust...Arise,” his debut album, in 2004. In 2005, he released “Live at Stubb's,” a live album that was recorded during a show in Austin, Texas. In 2006 he released “Youth,” another studio album. The remix album “No Place to Be,” was released in late 2006. It featured remixes and re-recordings of songs off all his three earlier albums in addition to a “Message in a Bottle” cover of The Police song. “Light,” Matisyahu's third studio album, was released in August 2009 in addition to “Live at Twist & Shout,” a live EP. He released “Live at Stubb's, Vol. 2, another live recording in February 2011.
