matisyahu Biography

Matisyahu, the American alternative rock and reggae musician, was born on June 30, 1979 in West Chester, Pennsylvania as Matthew Paul Miller. His stage and Hebrew name means "Gift of God." Matisyahu is known for blending hip hop beatboxing, rock and reggae sounds with traditional Jewish themes. "King Without Crown," his 2005's single, charted in the top 40 in the U.S. Matisyahu has released two live concert DVDs, two remix CDS, two live albums and three studio albums since 2004. He also appeared in the supernatural horror film "The Possession," where he played Tzadok. Matisyahu has worked with Kool Kojak and Sly & Robbie reggae producers throughout his career. JDub Records signed Matisyahu to a recording contract. In 2004 he released "Shake Off the Dust Arise," his first album. In 2006 Matisyahu released "Live at Stubb's," a live album that was recorded at an Austin, Texas concert. He then released "Youth," another studio album, in 2006. He toured Europe, Canada and the U.S. extensively in 2005-2006. He also made several visits to Israel, including a supporting spot with Sting. The remix album "No Place to Be" was released in late 2006. The album featured remixes and re-recordings of song from his three previous albums. In 2009 Matisyahu released "Light," a third studio album as well as "Live at Twist & Shout," a live EP. He released the live album "Live at Stubb's Vol. 2" in February 2011 and then went on tour. In July 2012 Matisyahu released "Spark Seeker," his latest album. The artistic style of Matisyahu fuses traditional vocal styles of Judaism's hazzan and jazz scat singing with contemporary styles of hip hop, beatboxing and rap rolled into a reggae music dominant background.
