mark knopfler Biography

Mark Knopfler, the British songwriter, singer, guitarist, film score composer and record producer, was born on August 12, 1949 in Glasgow, Scotland.

He is most known for being the lead guitarist, songwriter and vocalist for Dire Straits, the British rock band. In 1977, Mark co-founded the band with David Knopfler, his brother. After the break up of Dire Straits in 1995, Knopfler launched his solo career. He has also occasionally played in other groups like The Notting Hillbillies as well as worked as a special guest on other artists works, including Steely Dan, Gerry Rafferty, Van Morrison, Phil Lynott, Sonny Landreth, Jools Holland, Jeff Healey, Emmylou Harris, John Fogerty, Bryan Ferry, Bob Dylan, The Dandy Warhols, Eric Clapton, the Chieftains, Chet Atkins and Joan Armatrading. He has also been the producer on albums from Randy Newman, Willy DeVille, Bob Dylan and Tina Turner.

Musical scores from Knopfler include The Princess Bride, Wag the Dog, Last Exist to Brooklyn, Cal, Local Hero and Metroland.

Knopfler is known as one of the leading modern rock fingerstyle guitarists and Rolling Stone ranked him #27 on their 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list.

Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler to date have sold over 120 million albums.

Knopfler holds three honorary U.K. Doctorates in music.
