judas priest Biography
Judas Priest, the British Grammy-Award winning heavy metal band, was formed in 1969 in Birmingham, England. The core line-up of the band consists of Rob Halford (lead vocalist), Glenn Tipton (guitarist), Ian Hill (bassist) and Scott Travis (drummer). They have been a major influence for numerous heavy metal bands and musicians and often are called the “Metal Gods” in reference to their status as one of the most influential heavy metal bands as well as their song with the same name. Over the course of their career, Judas Priest has sold more than 50 million worldwide albums. The band is known for their two lead guitar style, the operatic vocal style of Halford and for introducing heavy metal to the S&M studs and leather look.
Judas Priest released “Rocka Rolla,” their debut album, in 1974. This set was followed by 1976's “Sad Wings of Destiny,” 1977's “Sin After Sin” and 1978's “Stained Class.” In 1978 the band also released “Killing Machine” ( the U.S. release had the tile of “Hell Bent for Leather). “Unleashed in the East,” a live set recorded in Japan on their tour to support “Killing Machine/Hell Bent for Leather”, was released in 1979. It was the band's first album to go platinum.
The band's next four albums, “British Steel” (1980), “Point of Entry” (1981), “Screaming for Vengeance” (1982) and “Defenders of the Faith” (1984) all featured shorter songs that had hooks that were more compatible with mainstream radio, while still retaining a heavy metal sound. The band added guitar synthesizers for an even more mainstream sound on their 1986 release “Turbo” and 1988 album “Ram It Down.” “Painkiller” was released in 1990 and the band dropped the synthesizers. Following their 1991 “Painkiller Tour,” Halford left the band. Judas Priest released “Jugulator” (1997) and “Demolition” (2001) with Tim Owens as their new lead singer. Halford reunited with the band in July 2003. In 2005, Judas Priest released “Angel of Retribution” and in 2008 “Nostradamus,” their most recent album.
