jimmy buffett Biography

The American singer-songwriter, movie producer, author and businessman Jimmy Buffett was born on December 25, 1946 in Mobile, Alabama. The music hits from Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band include “Come Monday” and “Margaritaville.” His devoted fan base is called “Parrotheads.”

Jimmy Buffett in addition to his musical career, is a best-selling author and is also involved in two chains of restaurants named after his singles “Margaritaville” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” Buffett owns the restaurant chain Margaritaville Cafe and is a co-developer of the restaurant concept Cheeseburger in Paradise along with Outback Steakhouse's parent OSI Restaurant Partners.

Buffett started his musical career as a country singer during the 1960's in Nashville, Tennessee. He recorded “Down to Earth, his first album, in 1970. He moved to Key West, Florida and started to combine pop, folk and country music along with tropical and coastal lyrical themes, which has been dubbed “gulf and western.” He visits Saint Barts, a Caribbean island, on a regular basis along with other islands for inspiration for his songs and characters from his books.

Jimmy Buffett released “A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean” in 1973. In 1974 both “A1A” and “Living & Dying in ¾ Time” were released. In 1976, he released “Havana Daydreamin'” and in 1977 “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes.” Buffett's breakthrough hit single “Margaritaville” was off of “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes.”

Buffet made much more money during the 1980s from his tours than he did his albums. Over the next twenty years, he released several albums and branched into merchandising and writing as well. He opened the retail store “Margaritaville” in Key West in 1985 and the Margaritaville Cafe opened in 1987. Jimmy Buffett continues to tour and has released more than 30 albums. His latest studio album, “Buffet Hotel,” was released in December 2009.
