janet jackson Biography
The American singer and actress Janet Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana on May 16, 1966 and raised in Los Angeles. Janet is the youngest Jackson child from the famous family of musicians. The first stage performances came for Janet when she was seven years old while performing with her family. Her acting career began in 1976 with “The Jacksons,” a variety television series. Throughout the 1970s-1980s, Jackson appeared in several other television programs, including Fame and Good Times.
In 1982, when she was sixteen years old, Janet Jackson signed a record contract with A&M. Her debut self-titled album was released September 21, 1982. Starting in 1986 with “Control,” her third studio set, Jackson started to collaborate with record producers Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam. Jackson's music with Lewis and Jam incorporated elements from rap, rock, funk, disco, and rhythm and blues, and included industrial beats, triplet swing and sample loop, which resulted in gaining her crossover appeal from popular music fans. Jackson has been recognized for innovative albums, music videos, choreography and MTV prominence, in addition to being a role model due to the socially conscious lyrics of her music.
Jackson signed her first multi-million dollar, record-breaking contract in 1991 with Virgin Records to establish herself as one of the music industry's highest paid artists. In 1993, she released “Janet”, her Virgin label debut album, which saw Jackson developing into a public sex symbol as she started to explore sexuality with her music. In 1993 she also appeared in “Poetic Justice,” which was her first starring role in a film. Jackson was named as second most successful musical recording artist of the 1990s. In 2001, “All for You” became Jackson's fifth studio album in a row to reach the No. 1 spot on Billboard's 200 album chart. She changed labels in 2007 when she signed with Island Records. The following year she released “Discipline,” her tenth studio set.
Jackson has sold over 100 million worldwide records, and is ranked as one of contemporary music's all-time best-selling artists. For U.S. female artists, she is listed by the Recording Industry Association of America as eleventh best-selling. Her extensive catalog of hit singles include “All For You,” “Together Again” “That's the Way Love Goes,” “Rhythm Nation” and “Nasty.” In 2008, Jackson was listed at No. 7 on Billboard's “Hot 100 All-Time Artists” and was number five on Billboard's “Top 50 R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of the Past 25 Years.” Janet Jackson's achievements, records and longevity are a reflection of her influence in defining and shaping popular music. Numerous performers have also cited Jackson as an inspiration.
