guns n roses Biography
Formed in 1985, Guns N’ Roses is a true blue Hollywood rock band, formed by the merging of the bands Hollywood Rose, of which GNR front man Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlim where former members, and L. A. Guns, of which guitarist Tracii Guns, bassist Ole Beich and drummer Rob Gardner where also former members. But the “Guns” half of the band were immediately replaced by guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler. Together with Rose and Stradlim, they would later be known as the more recognized pioneering members of GNR, whose punk-rock, heavy-metal and blues-rock musical style and ‘sex, drugs, rock n’ roll’ image “brought forth a hedonistic rebelliousness and revived the punk attitude-driven hard rock scene, reminiscent of the early Rolling Stones," as Rolling Stone puts it.
The band first garnered the attention of the music industry in 1986, when after months of opening for various rock acts such as The Dickies and Red Hot Chili Peppers, they released their four-track indie debut EP, ‘Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide’. The record later became a priced item for collectors, considering that only 10,000 vinyl copies of the album were issued. The following year, the band would cement itself as a mainstream heavy metal rock act and chart topper worthy of headlining performances with their debut full length release, ‘Appetite for Destruction’. The album spawned hits such as ‘Welcome to the Jungle’, ‘Paradise City’ and ‘Sweet Child o’ Mine’, their second single from the record and their first and only chart topper – to date – at the Billboard 100. However, with fame and success came a more myopic attention to the band’s lifestyle, one which involved Slash, Adler and McKagan’s heavy alcohol and drug abuse, particularly heroin, which Axl Rose dubbed as “Mr. Brownstone”.
The ’90s marked the surfacing of two of the band’s most acclaimed efforts, the double album ‘Use Your Illusion I’ and ‘Use Your Illusion II’. Recording the album was described by the band as both ambitious and challenging, for even during this time, drug addiction continued to weigh them down. Adler’s struggles with cocaine and heroin addiction led him to being sacked. Meanwhile, the band made a record after ‘Illusion’ I and II soared to no.2 and no.1 of the Billboard charts upon its simultaneous release in September 1991, a first for any music act. They’ll be holding on to that feat for 13 years, until Nelly released ‘Sweat’ and ‘Suit’ simultaneously in 2004 and achieved the same at the Billboard 200.
From the albums’ successes in 1991 until 1998, the band would be involved in a series of controversies springing from inherent personal tension, Rose’s volatile and primadonna-esque behavior, multiple incidents of audience riots - both in the US and overseas – during the ‘Use Your Illusion’ world tour, dismal sales of their 1993 ‘Illusion’ follow-up, ‘The Spaghetti Incident?’, and multiple revamps in the band’s lineup with Rose winding up as the lone pioneering member of the group by 1998. Multi-instrumentalist Chris Pitman, Bassist Tommy Stinson and keyboardist Dizzy Reed, who joined the band at different times, comprised GNR’s lineup for the next ten years.
In 2008, ‘Chinese Democracy’ not only marked GNR’s first album in exactly 15 years, but also the first full length effort from the new and improved Guns N’ Roses. In February 2009, Rose shut down any and all possibilities for a Guns N’ Roses reunion. “I'm not so comfortable with doing anything having more than one of the alumni,” he tells Billboard. When asked why a reunion is a no-go, he says, “I'd get left with sorting it out and then blamed on top of it.” He especially singled out Slash as the one former GNR member he would never work with ever again, “What's clear is that one of the two of us will die before a reunion and however sad, ugly or unfortunate anyone views it, it is how it is.”
To date, the band has still yet to confirm the details for a follow-up to ‘Chinese Democracy’. When probed for details during the Revolver Golden Gods Awards, DJ Ashba, who joined the band right before the start of the ‘Chinese Democracy’ world tour in 2009, commented that they are working on several new songs for the new record “every day”.
