The American singer Diana Ross was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 26, 1944. Ross was a member of The Supremes and served as their lead singer during the 1960s. In 1970, she left the group and launched her solo career. She has also worked as an actress on several successful Broadway and film projects. Ross was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actress for playing Billie Holiday in the 1972 film “Lady Sings the Blues.” She was awarded A Gold Globe for that role. In total Ross has won 8 awards from the American Music Awards and received twelve nominations from the Grammy Awards. For “An Evening with Diana Ross,” the singer's one woman show, Ross received a Tony Award in 1977.

Ross was named “Female Entertainer of the Century” by Billboard magazine in 1976. She has been declared the all-time most successful female musical artist by Guinness Book of World Records based on having more hits in the UK and US than any other female performer. She has had a total of eighteen No. 1 U.S. records and sold over 100 million worldwide records.

Ross has two stars, one as a The Supreme member and one as a soloist, on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. She was the recipient of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Honors Award in December 2007.
