david gray Biography

The English songwriter-singer David Gray was born in Sale, Cheshire in England on June 13, 1968. In 1993 Gray released his first album “A Century Ends” and his second set “Flesh” in 1994. Neither album was a commercial success but it did result in Gray become known within folk-rock circles. In 1996 he released “Sell, Sell, Sell,” his third album. While his earlier albums were completely acoustic folk music, the third album utilized what has become Gray's trademark blend of electronics, alternative rock and folk. The album didn't chart but did receive critical acclaim. The single “Late Night Radio” from the set did receive some play on UK alternative radio stations.

Gray released his fourth album in 1999 called “White Ladder” and began to receive worldwide recognition. The set included his well-known songs “Sail Away,” “Please Forgive Me,” “Babylon” and “This Year's Love.” In 2002 he released “A New Day at Midnight.” This set didn't receive as much critical acclaim as his previous album, but did got straight into the Number One spot and sold almost 150,00 copies during its first week out. Within a year the album reached platinum status. In 2005 Gray released “Life in Slow Motion,” which included the song “The One I Love,” which was a top ten hit.

Gray released a compilation album in March 2007 called “Shine:The Best of the Early Years” and in October 2007 a live cover compilation CD called “A Thousand Miles Behind,” followed by his “Greatest Hits” set in November 2007. Gray released “Draw The Line” in September 2009. The set featured guests appearances from Jolie Holland and Annie Lennox. Gray's most recent album is “Foundling,” which was released in August 2010.
