coldplay Biography

The British alternative rock band Coldplay was formed by Jonny Buckland, lead guitarist, and Chris Martin, lead vocalist, in 1996 at University College London. The original name of the band was Pectoralz. Then when bassist Guy Berryman joined they changed the group's name to Starfish. Multi-instrumentalist, backing vocalist and drummer Will Champion joined to complete the band's lineup. The band's manager, Phil Harvey, is frequently considered to be the group's unofficial fifth member. In 1998, the group changed their name to Coldplay. They then recorded and released three EPs: “Safety” (1998), “Brothers & Sisters” (1999) and “The Blue Room.” Coldplay has received 117 nominations and 43 awards, including fourteen nominations and six awards from Brit Awards. Three times they have won as Best British Group. Coldplay has also been nominated for twenty Grammy Awards and won seven. The band's most successful year was 2009. They were nominated for seven Grammys and won three.

The early material of Coldplay's was compared to groups like Travis, A-ha, U2 and Radiohead. In 2000, the band released their single “Yellow” as well as “Parachutes,” their debut album. The band released “A Rush of Blood to the Head,” their second album, in 2002. The set won several awards, including Album of the Year from New Musical Express. Coldplay's 2005 release “X&Y” was not as enthusiastically received but was still positive. “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” their fourth album, was released in 2008. Brian Eno produced the set and it earn several Grammy nominations as well as won. Over the course of their career, Coldplay has sold more than 50 million worldwide records.

Since “Parachutes” was released, Coldplay has drawn from many other sources, including Muse, George Harrison Kate Bush and Echo & the Bunnymen on their set “A Rush of Blood to the Head,” and on the album “Viva la Vida” they drew from My Bloody Valentine, Arcade Fire and Blur.
