Today a new slew of performers that will perform at this year’s American Music Awards was announced, including Justin Bieber, Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige, Maroon 5 and Kelly Clarkson. Announced by AMA producer Larry Klein, these will join previously announced performances by Katy Perry and Pitbull on the awards show that will take place at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on November 20. The show will air live on ABC.
Following a tradition started in 2009, the show will have no host, and performers instead will be introduced by a number of different celebrities. Klein said some of the performances will pair up artists, citing the example that Maroon 5 will be joined by Christina Aguilera for the performance of their hit “Moves Like Jagger.” Aguilera was featured on the original single version.
More performances are likely to be announced before show time, along with the possibilities of a few surprises along the way. Dick Clark created the American Music Awards in 1973, with the first show airing in 1974. As opposed to the Grammy Awards, which are voted on by members of the entertainment industry, the AMAs are voted on by members of the public. This year, votes can be cast by anyone online.
Female performers are leading the nominations pack this year, with Katy Perry, Adele, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga all receiving multiple nominations. Nominations were announced earlier this month at a ceremony hosted by Nicki Minaj and Pitbull.
From its inception until 2003, the AMAs were held in January, but was moved to November then to avoid competition with other major award shows that month like the Grammys and Academy Awards, held around the same time of the year. Though the Grammy Awards base their nominations on a yearlong eligibility period, the AMAs nominations are based exclusively on sales and airplay, even if the work is an older release.
Christina Aguilera will be one of the three coaches on the new reality show on NBC called “The Voice”.
This announcement was made just one day following Aguilera’s arrest for public intoxication. However, no charges were filed.
The other two coaches on the show will be Adam Levine, of Maroon 5 and Cee Lo Green.
All three musicians have won Grammy Awards and will be mentors for NBC’s new reality show that will first be televised at 9:00 p.m. on April 26. Carson Daly will be the host of the program.
Aguilera released a statement in which she said, “I am so excited to be part of such a wonderful project that celebrates music and the talent behind it. To be given the opportunity to help shape new artists; careers and mentor them to see their dreams come to fruition is a task I welcome with open arms. I am so happy to be working with fellow Grammy Award winners Adam and Cee Lo as I feel there is so much we can all bring to ‘The Voice.’”
According to NBC, in total, there will be four mentors that will contribute to “The Voice,” which is a competition for singers that will show the coaches selecting performers as they audition. After the mentors select their teams, they will have their songwriters, producers, and friends assist them in building a successful singing team.
The producers of the show are Mark Burnett, Talpa Productions and Warner Horizon Television. Burnett indicated that he really wanted Aguilera to be a coach above any other female singer.
Burnett said, “When I decided to produce ‘The Voice,’ I immediately knew that my first choice for a female coach had to be Christina Aguilera. Christina is an undeniable force in the music business. The is the epitome of ‘The Voice.’”
“The X Factor,” the hit talent show from the U.K., just like the show “American Idol” in the U.S., knows just how to pull all the stops out for their finale. At a November 9 news conference, a star-studded collaborators lineup was revealed by the finalists including will.i.am, Robbie Williams, Rihanna and Christina Aguilera, for the season’s final show on Saturday.
We will be doing a duet with Robbie Williams, said judge Simon Cowell on behalf of One Direction, his boy band of five members.
When asked how it felt to get to work with Williams, one band member was particularly excited about getting to collaborate with an artist with a high profile. Louis Tomlinson said, I’m a huge fan of Robbie’s. He is absolutely huge in the U.K. Having a chance to perform with Robbie is an honor.
Fans will also get to see Christina Aguilera gracing the stage for “X Factor.” Rebecca Ferguson revealed, I am doing a duet with Christina Aguilera. I am very happy. She is amazing and very talented.
Cher Lloyd announced she will be teaming up with will.i.am, frontman of the Black Eyed Peas, for her performance. Cheryl Cole, the British pop sensation and mentor of Lloyd’s, in the past worked with Will. She is very excited for Cher. Cole said, I told her she is very lucky and in a very fortunate position. He is the world’s biggest superstar. She knows she is very lucky. She’s very excited. This is right up her alley.
Rihanna will be bringing her Caribbean flavor of music to her performance with Matt Cardle. The contestant said, this week I will sing the best that I can and perform as best as I can.
Another celebrity marriage heads down the drain, or maybe not, or not yet at least.
Us Magazine reports that Christina Aguilera and her husband of five years, music producer and executive Jordan Bratman have decided to go on a trial separation. According to a magazine source who is also close to the couple, Bratman and Aguilera have not yet decided whether to file for a divorce or not but “have been separated a few months” and “will see how it goes” from there.
The couple tried to keep their married life off the radar so people are wondering what caused the split. The magazine source says the couple realized that they seemed better off as friends despite efforts to keep the romantic flames burning. Just last summer, the singer and star of the upcoming film “Burlesque” and Bratman tried to rekindle the romance by going on a couple’s trip to Italy but to no avail.
The two are still communicating though, amidst their separation, but the talks have mostly revolved around their two-year old son Max, and how to keep his life as normal as possible.
Aguilera has been seen tagging little Max along with her wherever she goes, most often at the recording studio as she puts in the finishing touches for the “Burlesque” soundtrack. The movie hits theatres on November 24.
Burlesque is a story about Ali Rose, a girl from Iowa who travels to Los Angeles escaping a dark past and finds a home in a neo-Burlesque club where she learns the art of sensual dance. She then aides the struggling joint through her musical prowess while becoming the club’s biggest star.
“Burlesque” will be making a splash on the big screen late this year with Christina Aguilera and Cher headlining the big screen musical. This is Aguilera’s first jump to the movies, and in a starring role, nonetheless.
When asked by USA Today what pulled her towards making the musical she said, “The whole idea of burlesque has always intrigued me. The art of the tease, the dance, beautiful women – need I say more?”. She even added that Ali’s story was a motivation, despite being passed along in several foster homes, “she doesn’t let her past make her a victim”. Aguilera portrays the role of Ali Rose.
The pop songstress also had nothing but compliments for Cher, who portrays club owner Tess in the movie. She found the trendsetting music legend as “no bull****”, “kind and warm”, and “had helpful advice and stories for days”.
“Burlesque” director Steven Antin was all praises for the 29-year old diva, describing her as a “freak of nature”, having no acting troubles whatsoever.
Initial promotional photos for the film have also surfaced where Aguilera can be seen fashioning a provocative satin outfit that reflects her curves while performing alongside other acrobats with a well-lit “Burlesque” hanging as a backdrop.
Aguilera also penned four songs for the movie’s soundtrack which is due in stores by November.
After singing at the series-tying Game 6 of the NBA Finals between the LA Lakers and the Boston Celtics, pop songstress Christina Aguilera will be gracing the center court of the Staples Center again tonight to open the game with the national anthem.
The Lakers have never won against the Celtics in a Game 7 match, hopefully, Aguilera’s voice will sprinkle some lucky dust on the boys who will be clad in yellow jerseys tonight to break that age-old Game 7 losing streak against the formidable Celtics.
Aguilera, who dropped her latest studio effort “Bionic” early this month, may also be in need of some luck as commercial and critical success for the new record might be a little elusive this time. The album, although it landed on the third spot of the Billboard 200, was not moving enough copies during its first week on stands. Critics are also slamming her for her hyper-sexed image and the direction she took for the latest set.
Critics call the album “crass and calculated”, which loosely translates to predictably tacky or overboard sexy, as evidenced by the video for the album’s carrier single “Not Myself Tonight”. They are also calling out on Aguilera’s collaborators for the album like The Dream, Le Tigre and Polow Da Don. They feel that while Aguilera was trying to test the waters with this new image and sound, she lost a bit of her vulnerability and identity along the way.
Aguilera’s release of “Bionic”, her newest studio set, came at a time where the airwaves in UK are infested with World Cup themes, such as “Waka Waka” by Shakira and old, resurfacing tracks like “3 Lions”. But despite that, Aguilera still dominates the UK Albums Chart for the second time.
“Bionic” (RCA/Sony Music Entertainment) follows the footsteps of 2006’s “Back to Basics” as they both reign the album charts during their respective release weeks. In fact, “Bionic” sped past through Alicia Keys’ “The Element of Freedom” which bounced back at number 2 after being held at the 5th spot last week. Lagging behind “Freedom” is Canadian crooner Michael Buble’s “Crazy Love” (Reprise/Warner Music) at the 3rd spot, while “Glee, The Music Vol. 3: Showstoppers” (Epic/Sony Music Entertainment) are not so far behind at number 4. Following the “Glee” compilation is Lady Gaga’s “The Fame Monster” (Interscope/Universal) which fell one place to number 5 and Jack Johnson’s “To the Sea” (Brushfire/Universal Island) is at 6th place.
Moving on, the Royal Air Force Squadronaires’ “In the Mood: The Glenn Miller Songbook” (Decca/Universal) is occupying the 7th spot while another Glenn Miller release, “The Very Best of Glenn Miller” is up four notches to number 8. Billy Joel and Steve Winwood are also making noteworthy movements in the top 20 as Joel’s “Piano Man” is up one spot to number 15 while Winwood’s “Revolutions” is making its debut at the 18th spot.
As for the singles charts, it is as infested as the radio airwaves with tracks like “Shout” (Syco Music/Sony Music Entertainment) by Dizzie Rascal and James Corden atop the list. In a report sent by the OCC, “Shout” had already sold 110,000 copies after only five days from its release. Chart runners-up include “Frisky” (Parlophone/EMI) by Tinie Tempah and Labirinth at number 2, “Wavin’ Flag”, another World Cup theme from K’naan and Coca-Cola rose 13 spots to take spot number 3, “Getting’ Over You” (Positiva/EMI) by David Guetta, Fergie, LMFAO and Chris Willis at number 4, Eminem’s comeback track “Not Afraid”(Interscope/Universal) at number 5 after being down one spot last week, and Usher’s collaboration with Will.I.Am “OMG” (LaFace/Universal) moved up five notches to number 6. Wrapping up the top ten singles list is “3 Lions” (Epic/Sony Music Entertainment) which resurfaced at number 10.
Since the World Cup opened just a few days ago with England earning a draw with the US, here is the rundown of football inspired tracks and where they are at the charts. Starting with FIFA’s official World Cup theme “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” by Shakira and Freshlyground, surfacing at the charts for the first time at number 38, followed by an old chart topping hit from Fat Les twelve years ago, “Vindaloo” (Demon) at number 32, “Three Lions 2010” (Parlophone/ EMI) by Squad, up seven notches from number 39 to number 28, “If I Can Dream” by Terry Venables debuting at number 23 and finally, the 1990 New Order hit “World in Motion” resurfaced at number 22.
Meanwhile, Jack Johnson reigns supreme in the Billboard European Albums chart with “To the Sea”, while ruling over the European Singles chart is Lena Meyer-Landrut’s winning piece to the Eurovision Song Contest, “Satellite” (USFO/Universal), which debuted at number 18 but has risen quickly to the top of the list.
Christina Aguilera’s upcoming 20-city summer tour which should kick off in July 15 in Uncasville, CT was canceled due to the artist’s tightly knit schedule which leaves no time for her to prepare for the said tour.
The tour will be rescheduled for 2011 but no word yet as to exactly when. Aguilera just finished wrapping up “Burlesque”, a movie which also stars iconic singer Cher. Aguilera is also busy promoting her forthcoming “Bionic” album, which is her fourth studio release.
With all these up in Aguilera’s hands, that leaves her with less than a month to prepare for the summer tour. The singer would like to have ample time to rehearse for the series of events. Meanwhile, tickets that have been on sale since last week can be refunded at the point of purchase.
“Burlesque” is scheduled to hit theaters in the fall. Aguilera’s “Bionic” is lated to be released on June 8.

“Bionic” is Aguilera’s fourth studio album and the first since “Back to Basics” from 2006. “Back to Basics” debuted at number one on The Billboard 200 and won Aguilera the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Aint No Other Man” in the Grammys. “Candyman” also earned her nominations for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
