Britney Spears, the American pop singer, was born on December 2, 1981 in McComb, Mississippi. She grew up in Kentwood, Louisiana. Britney started performing while still a child and landed acting roles in television shows and stage productions. In 1997 she signed a recording contract with Jive Records. In 1999 Spears released “Baby One More Time,” her debut album. During her first ten years in music, Spears became a prominent popular culture and mainstream popular music figure, which was followed by a highly publicized and turbulent personal life. With the release of her first albums, she became established as pop music icon in addition to breaking sales record. Her title tracks “Oops!... I Did It Again” and “Baby One More Time” became number one international hits. During the later 1990s Spears helped to revive teen pop music.

In 2001, Spears released “Britney,” her third album. She also starred in the movie “Crossroads.” On “In the Zone,” her fourth album released in 2003, Spears assumed creative control. The set spawned the chart-topping singles “Everytime,” “Toxic” and “Me Against the Music.” Spears, after releasing two compilation albums, began to experience personal problems which resulted in her career going into hiatus. She released “Blackout,” her fifth album, in 2007. The set spawned the hit singles “Piece of Me” and “Gimme More” despite getting very little promotion Spears hospitalizations and erratic behavior in 2008 resulted in her being placed into a conservatorship. “Circus,” her six album, was also released in 2008, which spawned the lead, global chart-topping single “Womanizer.” “The Circus Starring Britney Spears” followed in support of the album. She then released “The Singles Collection,” a greatest hits album, which featured the Canadian and U.S. No. 1 single “3.”

Britney Spears has sold more than 100 million worldwide records, which makes her one of contemporary music's all time best-selling musical artists. According to RIAA, Spears, with certified albums of 32 million, is the eighth best-selling female singer in the U.S. For the 21st century's first decade Spears is the top-selling female artist and fifth overall. Billboard ranked Spears as 8th Artist for the decade of 2000-2010. Forbes ranked Spears sixth in June 2010 on their list of the world's 100 Most Influential and Powerful Celebrities, and the world's third most cited musician.
