bob seger Biography

The American singer-songwriter and rock musician Bob Seger was born on May 6, 1945 in Dearborn, Michigan. Throughout the 1960s Seger recorded and performed as a successful local Detroit-area artist under the name The Bob Seger System. He dropped “System” in the early 1970's from his recordings. He played with other bands and continued trying to achieve national success.

In 1973, Seger assembled “The Silver Bullet Band, which was a group of musicians from the Detroit area. He achieved his greatest success with them. Seger achieved national fame in 1976 with two albums, “Night Moves,” a studio record, and “Live Bullet,” a live album. On Seger's studio albums, he worked extensively with Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, an Alabama-based band. They appeared on several Seger best selling albums and singles.

Seger is a roots rocker and has a raspy, classic shouting voice. His inspirations include Elvis Presley and Little Richard. Seger's songs explore blue collar themes. He has recorded mutliple rock-n-roll hits including “Like a Rock,” “Turn the Page” and “Night Moves.” Seger also co-wrote “Heartache Tonight,” the number one hit by the Eagles. In 2001 “Old Time Rock and Roll,” Seger's iconic signature song, was named a Song of the Century.

Seger's career has spanned five decades. He continues recording and performing today. His song “Old Time Rock & Roll” is the No. 2 Jukebox Singles all time most played song, trailing only “Crazy” by Patsy Cline. Many artists have covered Seger's songs, including Metallica and Thin Lizzy.

In 2004, Seger became a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
