The American hip hop band the Beastie Boys is from Brooklyn, New York. Group members include Michael Diamond (Mike D), Adam Yauch (MCA) and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock).

The Beastie Boys got their start in 1979 and were a hardcore punk band at that time. They appeared on “New York Thrash,” a compilation cassette with Beastie and Riot Fight. In 1982 they released “Polly Wog Stew,” their first EP. In 1983 the band achieved moderate success locally with the release of “12” Cooky Puss,” an experimental hip-hop EP. In 1984 the Beastie Boys transitioned to hip-hop and released several successful 12” singles. In 1986 “Licensed to Ill,” their debut album, was released to widespread commercial success and critical acclaim. The Beastie Boys, as of 2010, have sold over 22 million U.S. and 40 million worldwide albums.

The Beastie Boys are one of the world's longest running hip-hop acts. They continue enjoying critical and commercial success over 20 years after releasing their debut album. In 2007 the Beastie Boys were nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The group in 2009 released deluxe digitally remastered editions of “Hello Nasty,” “Ill Communication,” “Check Your Head,” and “Paul's Boutique.
