andrea bocelli Biography

The Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli was born on September 22, 1958 in Lajatico, Tuscany. He was born with bad eyesight. When he was twelve years old, he became completely blind after a football accident.

In 1994, Bocelli won the Newcomers section at Sanremo Music festival. Over the course of his career, he has released thirteen albums, both classical and pop music, eight complete operas, and two greatest hits sets. He has sold over 70 million worldwide copies to make him the all-time top selling solo artist of classical music.

In 1999, Bocelli was nominated for a Grammy Award as Best New Artist. It was the first and only time so far that a classical artist has received a nomination for that category since 1961 when Leontyne Price was nominated. “The Prayer,” Andrea Bocelli's duet with Celine Dion which appeared in “The Quest for Camelot,” received an Academy Award nomination and won a Golden Globe Award as Best Original Song.

In 1999, Andrea Bocelli released “Sacred Aria” a classical album, capturing a Guinness Book of World Records listing by holding the top 3 positions simultaneously on the classical albums U.S. charts. Since then five of Bocelli's albums have made it into the Top 10 of Billboard's 200 chart and seven have topped the U.S. classical albums chart.

“Sacred Arias” has sold more than 5 million worldwide copes and is the all-time top-selling classical album from a solo artist. “Romanza,” Bocelli's 1997 pop album, has sold nearly 20 million worldwide copies to make it the all-time top-selling album from an Italian artist. “Time to Say Goodbye,” the first single off the album, topped the charts across Europe and topped Germany's charts for 14 weeks in a row. Bocelli is widely regarded to be the world's most popular classical and Italian singer.
