andre rieu Biography

Andre Rieu, the Dutch violinist, composer and conductor, was born on October 1, 1949 in Maastricht, Netherlands. He is best known for forming the Johann Strauss Orchestra.

He attended Brussels' Music Academy from 1974-1977, winning the academy's Premier Prix. He received positive audience reaction when he performed Franz Lehar's “Gold And Silver Waltz,” which influenced his decision to continue with the waltz form. He performed with Limburg's Symphony Orchestra as a violinist and established the Maastricht Salon Orchestra. In 1987 Rieu formed his very own production company as well as the Johann Strauss Orchestra. Since that time, his rock-star presence and melodramatic stage performances have helped to revive the waltz. Andre Rieu performs with a Stradavarius violin from 1667.

Johann Strauss Orchestra originally began with 12 members. However, their performances now include 40 to 50 musicians. Their first tours of Europe helped to renew interest in the waltz. This revival started in the Netherlands, fueled by the Orchestra’s recording of Shostakovich's Second Waltz from his Jazz Suites. Rieu, as a result, came to be known as Waltz King.

The orchestra and Rieu have performed all over Europe, Japan and North America. They have won numerous awards and their recordings have been certified platinum and gold in many countries. In the Netherlands they have gone 8 times Platinum.

Andre Rieu and the orchestra record their CDs and DVDs at Rieu's Maastricht recording studios in folk and popular music as well as classical music and music from famous musical theatre and soundtracks. His incessant marketing and lively orchestral presentations have helped to attract worldwide audiences for his classical music sub genre.

Some of the performances of the orchestra have aired on PBC in the U.S. as well as in the U.K, including “Andre Rieu Live in Dublin” in 2003, which was filmed in Dublin, and “Andre Rieu Live in Tuscany” in 2005, which was filmed in Cortona, Tuscany at Piazza Della Repubblica.
