allman brothers Biography
The American rock band The Allman Brothers Band was established in 1969 in Jacksonville, Florida by brothers Gregg Allman (songwriter, vocals, organ) and Duane Allman (lead guitar and slide guitar), with support provided by Jaimoe Johanson (drums), Butch Trucks (drums) bassist Berry Oakley and Dickey Betts (songwriter, vocals, lead guitar). The band is considered Southern Rock's principal architect although they also incorporate elements of jazz, blues and country into their music. Their live shows are also characterized by jam band-style instrumental songs and improvisation.
In 1971, the Allman Brothers achieved their commercial and artistic breakthrough when they released “At Fillmore East.” The set featured extended versions of their songs “Whipping Post” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” It is frequently considered to be one of the very best live albums to have ever been made. A few months after the albums was released Duane Allman died from a motorcycle accident. A year later their bassist Berry Oakley also died from a motorcycle accident. They were replaced by Lamar Williams and Chuck Leavell. The commercial success for the band peak in 1973 with the release of their set “Brothers and Sisters” which spawned their hit “Ramblin' Man.” The band began to experience internal turmoil and in 1976 the group dissolved. They reformed briefly in 1979 and in 1982 dissolved once again.
The group reformed again in 1989 with new members. Since that time they have been touring and recording. During the late 1990s, several personnel changes followed, capped by Betts departure. During the 2000s the band found stability with Derek Truck, their drummer's nephew, and Warren Haynes serving as the group's guitarists. They become well known for their month long series of shows each spring in New York City. Between 1971 and 2005, the band was award five platinum and eleven gold albums. In 1995, they became Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees.
