Frequently Asked Questions
What songs will Pet Shop Boys play in concert?
The Pet Shop Boys released a spiritual successor to their late 80’s record Actually, in 2013, called Electric and it takes up much of the setlist in 2014. While this may not be par for the course for an 80’s group touring over three decades into their career, the critical appreciation of the album is phenomenal, and represents a new wave in their catalog.
Electric is a sequel of sorts to 2012’s Elysium, and many fans consider this and Actually one cumulative project. The Electric album opener “Axis” shows up in the setlist as well as two other album titles “Thursday” and the brooding “Love Is a Bourgeois Construct.”
A handful of tracks from Elysium show up, including “Leaving” and the maniacal “Winner.” The group sometimes switches out “Winner” with the self-aware and meta-referential track “Your Early Stuff” from that same record.
In all, the group’s last two albums make up about half of the setlist. The other third contains classic hits, such as their chart smash “West End Girls” with an odd position smack in the middle of the set. “Vocal” closes the show, and though it may not be the largest single the group has ever heard, it is more than recognizable by even surface fans.
The Pet Shop Boys keep the setlist similar each time out, making only minor changes which may have more to do with curfew and time than trying to change it up. Pet Shop Boys omit some songs from the setlist despite being a part of the previous show. Another reason is the group uses big theatrics and visuals to accompany the music. This is not some laid back solo acoustic show which is more apt to change on a whim.

Does the band play any covers?
The band has two covers they play far and above all the others. This is a cover of Village People’s early 70’s disco jam “Go West” and Brenda Lee’s soothing and milky soft ballad “Always on My Mind.” Both are standards for 2014. The band may play “Somewhere” by Leonard Bernstein, but not quite as often.
Lastly, the band may play a dance oriented rendition of U2’s great late 80’s sweeping epic, “Where the Streets Have No Name.” Both groups came out of the same era, so hearing their version is like a wonderful blast to the past and a great homage to that other big 80’s pop band.
How long is a Pet Shop Boys concert?
The Pet Shop Boys put forward a pretty formidable set. The set goes on for about two hours, with a break in between the initial set and the encore which is quite long.
Who is opening the show?
The Pet Shop Boys have a very dance oriented sound, based on a lot of alternative pop, disco, and electronica. This makes DJ Omar Perez a pretty appropriate opening act. The artist is prolific as a touring DJ, and his sound fits tonally into the echelon of late 80’s dance. This is a one man show with his set lasting about 45 minutes.
Who is Pet Shop Boys’ publicist and press contact?
The Pet Shop Boys work with Becker Brown Management Company. You can contact them through their general email at info@beckerbrown.com.
How do I get access to presale tickets for Pet Shop Boys’ tour?
American Express has their platform for purchasing presale tickets, and the Pet Shop Boys 2014 tour is almost completely covered by American Express. Users need an American Express card to make the purchase, as well as an account with TicketMaster for the ticket purchase.
Presale tickets are also available through the official band website, and no fan club membership is needed.
Concert Reviews
“Musician Chris Lowe kept his mouth sternly shut and his eyes shielded behind shades.
It’s an apt approach for music that has always seesawed between the aloof and the urgent. At once, The Pet Shop Boys’ songs have the immediacy of dance music and the remove of intellectual pop. Likewise, Neil Tennant’s vocals balance the arch with the sweet, while his lyrics use cynicism to deflect from very real needs that lurk below.” – Jim Farber of the New York Daily News
“On paper, a few of the wild highlights of the Pet Shop Boys’ performance Saturday at the Shrine Auditorium seem so ridiculous: Two backing dancers wearing sparkly, gold and silver lamé pompom suits, bouncing on pogo sticks while the long-running British synth-pop duo played their infectious hit “Domino Dancing,” for example.” – Randall Roberts of the Los Angeles Times
“As they were carried into the Olympic Stadium on rickshaws while wearing over-sized pointy hats, the Pet Shop Boys appeared to confirm their status as unlikely national treasures at the closing ceremony for London 2012. And, as the band severed a three-decade association with a record company that is also home to Coldplay and Blur, they seemed to be signalling the end of an era, too.” – Adrian Thrills of the UK Daily Mail
