Vicente Fernandez, the Mexican singer, actor and producer, was born in Jalisco, Mexico on February 17, 1940. Fernandez got his start in music singing on the street for tips. He has become a cultural icon in Mexico . He has recorded over 50 albums and has also appeared in many films. Alejandro Fernandez, the popular singer, is his son. He is also the father of Vicente Fernandez Jr.

To English-speaking audiences he is not as well known. However Fernandez has consistently filled venues and stadiums over the course of his 25 plus year career as a performing artist. His repertoire is all ranchera, which is a style that has been described as representing the old way of Mexican life, romanticized with philandering caballeros, revolution and rural ranches. Fernandez has sold more than 65 million worldwide copies.

Fernandez got his start in 1966 when CBS Mexico, which is called Sony Discos now, signed him to a recording contract. Fernandez released “Perdoname,” his first recording, in 1966. Ever since his career has been nonstop. He got his acting career started in 1971 when he appeared in the movie “Tacos al Carbon.” Fernandez has worked in over 40 films, with his last appearance occurring in 1991. “Volver, volver,” the great hit for Fernandez, was released in 1976. “15 Grandes con el numero uno,” his 1983 album, was his first set to sell one million copies.
