tool Biography

Tool, the progressive metal band, was formed in 1990 in Los Angeles, California. Current band members include lead singer Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, bassist Justin Chancellor and Danny Carey (percussion, drums). In 1995, Justin Chancellor replaced Paul D'Amour, the original bassist of the band. Tool has released four studio albums, performed worldwide tours and won a total of three Grammy Awards.

Tool released “Undertow,” their first studio album, in 1993. The band became one of the dominant acts of the emerging alternative metal movement when they released Aenima, their second album, in 1996. The band has continued to attempt to unify visual arts and musical experimentation with messages of personal evolution in their latest two albums” 2001's “Lateralus” and 2006's “10,000 Days.” The band has continued gaining success and critical acclaim all over the world.

The band, due to their complex and long releases as well as incorporating visual arts into their work, are often described as an act that transcends style and is part of both art rock and progressive rock. Tools has an ambivalent relationship with the music industry, which has been marked by censorship at times and the members of the band insisting on privacy.
