tool Biography

The American rock band Tool was established in 1990 in Los Angeles, California. The band's lineup includes Maynard James Keenan (vocalist), Danny Carey (drummer), Adam Jones (guitarist) and Justin Chancellor (bassist). In 1995 Chancellor replaced Paul D'Armour, the band's original bassist. Tool has released albums that have topped the charts in numerous countries, embarked on several worldwide tours, and won 3 Grammy Awards.

The band's sound was heavy metal, and the group later became one of the alternative metal movement's dominant acts. Tool is known for their complex and long releases as well as for incorporating visual arts into their music. The band's sound has been characterized as art rock, psychedelic rock and progressive rock.

Tool's debut album "Undertow" was released in 1993. The album helped to keep heavy metal music prominent within the mainstream. In 2001 "Undertow" was certified double platinum. Two singles were spawned off the album: "Prison Sex" and "Sober." The band released "AEnima," their second album, in 1996. The album debuted in the No. 2 spot on Billboard's 200 chart. In 2003 the set was certified triple platinum. In 1998 the album was awarded a Grammy as Best Metal Performance. "Lateralus," Tool's third album, was released in 2001. It debuted in the No. 1 spot on Billboard's 200 chart and eventually went double platinum. The single "Schism" won the Best Metal Performance Grammy Award in 2002. In 2006 tool released "10,000 Days," their fourth and most recent album. The album spawned three singles. "Vicarious" debuted in the No. 2 spot on Modern Rocks Tracks. "The Pot" peaked in the No. 5 spot on Modern Rock chart. The third single was 'Jambi." Tool has been working on a new album since 2009.
