Tina Turner Confesses to Oprah Her Touring Days Over
Legendary singer and diva Tina Turner just told Oprah Winfrey that she’s retiring from the music touring business.
The pair covered a lot during their chat, including Turner’s relationship with her abusive ex, Ike, her recent marriage to longtime (25 years!!!) partner Erwin Bach and her legacy.
On “Oprah’s Next Chapter”, the singer admitted she was tired of touring, and explained what made her take the marriage step:
“There comes a time in life when you must put things in place,” Turner said. “First I started consolidating, getting rid of property. I got rid of a house in France, a property in America. I made a situation for my sons. Anything that was costly I totally got rid of. Then it occurred to me, if something happened in death for me, Erwin would have no say, and I thought it was a bit unfair to live with someone as long as we are, and not to give him any say.”
She went on to talk about touring’s effect on her health and while she hasn’t entirely ruled out a return to the stage, she didn’t want to give a performance she couldn’t feel proud of.
“The body had started to react on working on high blood pressure. I was taking medication, which pulled me back. I couldn’t get into that second gear to fly. I couldn’t hit my notes… Damn it I really wanted to hit those notes, and I had to fake it somehow”
“I worked hard all my life, nobody gave me a thing. I knew that financially I could do it(retire) and when I left there, I put it to rest, I put it to sleep.”
“I wanted to retire and not worry. I received a revelation of ‘This is it, I’m going home now’. No one ever knew onstage how tired of singing and dancing I was.”
On behalf of everybody with any soul in the world: Tina Turner, you will be much missed, but you deserve a magnificent retirement.
