The Pixies Assemble U.S. Dates for 2014 Tour
It’s the reunion that just keeps on giving: after announcing their first new material since 2004′s Bam Thwok, and a European tour, Pixies are set to own 2014 with plans for a new North American tour.
The 33-city tour is set to kick off on January 15th in Toronto and will see the alternative Gods make stops in their hometown of Boston, as well as Philadelphia, Nashville, Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, and Seattle, among others, before wrapping up at Austin’s Music Hall on March 1st. Support is set to come from special guests Best Coast, Cults and Fidlar.
Pixies fans have had a mostly-excellent, if also emotionally taxing year, with feelings ranging from sorrow all the way to jubilant. Earlier in the year, the band announced that founding bassist Kim Deal had decided to part ways with Pixies. The band posted on their Facebook page:
“We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.”
It hasn’t all been doom and gloom, however, after the band released their first new material in 9 years in the form of four-track EP, the deceptively-titled, EP-1.
Richard Jones, the Pixies’ manager, spoke to Rolling Stone about Deal’s departure and the band’s desire to reform: “Everyone was just devastated. But everybody believed in the songs. We decided to just carry on and see what happens.”
Meanwhile, the Pixies have been keeping themselves busy, playing Riot Fest last month and also stopping by “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” with new touring bassist Kim Shattuck (check out the clip below). The foursome are currently on a European tour, which kicked off this weekend.
