the jayhawks Biography
The American alternative rock and country band The Jayhawks was formed in 1985 in Minneapolis, Minnesota as part of the mid 1980s music scene in the Twin Cities. Many Twin Cities circuit bands from the 1980s and 1990s such as The Honeydogs, The Gear Daddies and Uncle Tupelo were influenced by The Jayhawks' country rock sound. The band has released seven studio albums. A new album is expected to be released in 2011, following their 2005-2009 hiatus. Current band members include founding members Mark Olson (vocals, acoustic guitar) and Gary Louris (vocals, electric guitar), along with Marc Perlman (bass), Karen Grotberg (vocals, keyboards) and Tim O'Reagan (drums).
The Jayhawks released their self-titled debut in 1986 with the small independent record label Bunkhouse Records. Olson wrote most of the band's music, which had a strong country-rock/roots influence. Over the next several years the band worked on demo tapes as they sought a recording contract with a major label. The collected 1986-1989 demos formed their 1989 album “Blue Earth, which was released by Twin Tone, a Minneapolis label.
In 1991 the band signed with Def American and released “Hollywood Town Hall” in 1992. The album became a hit, with “Waiting for the Sun,” the hit single, driving its popularity. In 1995 The Jayhawks released “Tomorrow the Green Grass” and in 1997 “Sound of Lies,” with the latter set mixing straight rock, acoustic, psychedelic and dub elements. The band's 2000 set “Smile” had a pop music sound that was jarring for some of the long-time fans of the band. In 2003, the Jayhawks released “Rainy Day Music,” which had a more acoustic, stripped down sound, returning the band to its alt-country roots. A new album “Mockingbird Time” is expected to be released in 2011.
