the head and the heart Biography
The Head and the Heart is an indie band hailing from Seattle, WA and formed in 2009 as a result of the members' constant interactions at the Conor Byrne pub in Seattle. Comprised of Josiah Johnson and Jonathan Russell both on vocals and guitars, Charity Rose Thielen on violin, Chris Zasche on bass, Kenny Hensley on keyboards and Tyler Williams on drums, the band is known for playing a combination of folk, alternative, pop and rock tunes with strongly apparent percussive, piano and string infusions.
Their eponymous debut album hit the shelves in spring 2011 and was released under the independent label Sub Pop records. All tracks were written by all six members of the band. The album didn't perform well in the Billboard 200, peaking only at no.109, but it peaked at no.3 at the Billboard Folk Albums chart. However, the band has self-released the same album two years prior, in its raw and original form without the digital improvements, reworks and even its own CD case, only a handcrafted denim sleeve to protect the record. Through self-promotion during their concerts and word-of-mouth resulting to notable local sales, they were able to move 10,000 copies of the release.
Apart from headlining gigs all throughout the US and Europe in 2010 and 2011, the six-man act have also played as opening act for other rock contemporaries such as Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberists, Dave Matthews, Vampire Weekend and many more. In 2011, the band started to be on the media's radar when their native's 'City Arts' magazine tagged them as Seattle's Best New Band (March 2011 issue) and a month after, they premiered on national TV via a performance in the April 21, 2011 episode of the late night talk show 'Conan'.
