the decemberists Biography
The indie folk rock group The Decemberists are from Portland, Oregon. Songwriter/singer Colin Meloy is their frontman. Other band members include Chris Funk (multi-instrumentalist, guitar), Jenny Conlee (harmonica, keyboards, piano, melodica, accordion, Hammond organ), Nate Query (string bass, bass guitar) and John Moen (guitar, melodica, backing vocals, drums).
In 2001, the band released “5 Songs,” their debut EP. “The King Is Dead” was released in 2011 via Capitol Records and is the band's sixth full-length set. The Decemberists are noted for their lyrics, which focus often on folklore or historical incidents, in addition to their live shows which are very eclectic. Often audience participation plays a part in their performances, usually during the encores. Band members stage reenactments of centuries old events such as sea battles or act songs out with audience members.
Their songs range from instrumentally lush ballads to upbeat pop. They often use instruments such as the upright bass, Wurlitzer organ, Hammond organ and accordion. In terms of their lyrics, The Decemberists favor storytelling as opposed to the introspection and angst that is common in most modern rock, which is illustrated by such songs as “The Mariner's Revenge Song” and “My Mother Was a Chinese Trapeze Artist.”
