The alternative country and folk group The Civil Wars consists of singer-songwriters John Paul White and Joy Williams. The met in 2008 during a songwriting session in Nashville, Tennessee. They have released an EP of four songs and live performance album in addition to "Barton Hollow," their 2011 debut studio album. In 2012 The Civil Wars won Grammy Awards:Best Folk Album as well as Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

The Civil Wars released "Live at Eddie's Attic," their first EP, in 2009. It was a recording of a performance they did in Decatur, Georgia in April 2009. As of 2011 the EP has had more than 400,000 free download requests. In November 2009 the group released "Poison & Wine," a digital EP. The title song from the EP was featured on "Grey's Anatomy" television program. "Poison & Wine" reached the No. 12 spot on Billboard's 200 chart as well as the No. 1 spot on Billboard's Digital Albums chart. During the first week of its release it sold 25,000 copies.

The civil Wars received a lot of exposure in 2011, performing at the ASCAP Music Cafe, Sundance Film Festival and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The Civil Wars made appearances on A Prairie Home Companion and the NPR program All Things Considered. They also opened for Adele on her North American tour and several Emmylou Harris shows. The duo were nominated for CMT and American Music Awards in 2011. In 2012 The Civil Wars received three CMT Music Award nominations in addition to winning two Grammy Awards.
