The Cars Release New Album, Schedule Tour Dates

Last July offered an early hint that The Cars might be reuniting when someone associated with the group posted a cryptic message on the band’s Facebook page that said, “Anyone in the mood for a reunion by The Cars?” A sample of a new song called “Sad Song” was posted by the band in December, 2010. A music video followed in March.

The Cars will begin their tour on the same day that their new album Move Like This is released. They will play their first show of the reunion tour at Seattle’s Showbox SoDo on May 10. They will then head south to Los Angeles on May 12, where they will play at the Palladium in Hollywood. The group will also play on May 13 at Oakland’s Fox Theatre, May 15 at Denver’s The Fillmore, May 17 at Minneapolis’ First Avenue, May 18 at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre, May 20 at Toronto’s The Sound Academy, May 23 at Washington, D.C.’s 9:30 Club, May 25 at New York City’s Roseland, and May 26 at Boston’s House of Blues, where the tour will wind up.

The members of the most recent edition of The Cars include all of the original band members who are currently living. Benjamin Orr, singer and bassist for the group, died in 2000 from pancreatic cancer, but Ric Ocasek, Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes and David Robinson are still in the band. Based on information from Rolling Stone, playing bass on Move Like This is both Hawkes and Garrett “Jacknife” Lee, who is also producing the album.

In a February interview with Rolling Stone, Ocasek said, “It seemed strange when Ben wasn’t there for rehearsals. I’m kind of used to the fact that he passed away awhile ago. But when we first got together, it was like, ‘Oh yeah, it’s just the four of us here. Whoever wants to play bass, just play.”

Tickets for the tour are now on sale.
