system of a down Biography

The rock band System of a Down was established in 1994 in Glendale, California. Band members include Serj Tankian (rhythm guitar, keyboards and lead vocals), Daron Malakian (vocals, guitar), Shavo Odadjian (background vocals, bass) and drummer John Dolmayan. The band has released five studio albums and achieved commercial success. Three of their albums have debuted in the No. 1 spot on Billboard's 200 chart. System has received four Grammy award nominations and won in 2006. In 2006 the band went on hiatus, but reunited in 2010. In 2011 they launched a worldwide tour.

System released their self-titled debut album in 1998. The album was moderately successful, with the first singles "Spiders" and "Sugar" becoming radio favorites. They toured as openers with Metallica and Slayer and played at Ozzfest. The band also toured with Incubus and Fear Factory. They released Toxicity, the band's second album, in 2001. The album debuted in the No. 1 spot on both the Canadian and American charts. Eventually the set was certified multi-platinum and has sold more than 12 million worldwide copies. In 2002 "Steal This Album," the band's third album, was released.

In 2005 System released a double album in two seperate releases. "Mezmerize" came out in May and debuted in the No. 1 spot in multiple countries. It sold more than 800,000 copies in the first week of its release. "Hypnotize" ame out in November 2005. It also debuted in the No. 1 spot in the US. The band went on a hiatus in 2006 but began touring together again starting in 2010.
