The American rock band Styx was established in Chicago, Illinois in 1971. They were hugely successful during the late 1970s through the early 1980s on the strength of their top selling albums and hit singles. The band is well known for their blending the prog-rock style with strong ballads, hard rock guitar and even some American musical theater elements.

Styx is most known for their hit singles, including 1975′s “Lady” (No. 6), 1977′s “Come Sail Away” (No. 8), 1979′s “Babe” (No. 1), 1981′s “The Best of Times” (No. 3) and “Too Much Time on My Hands” (No. 9) and 1983′s “Mr. Roboto” (No. 3). Styx had four albums in a row achieve multi-platinum status.

The band got its start when twin brothers John and Chuck Panozzo formed a band called The Tradewinds in 1961 with neighbor Dennis DeYoung. By 1972, the band had added new members and Wooden Nickel Records signed the group to contract. They changed their name to Styx. The band released four albums with Wooden Nickel Records: 1972′s Styx, 1973′s Styx II, 1973′s The Serpent Is Rising as well as 1974′s Man of Miracles. The band developed a Chicago area fan base but did not achieve mainstream success.

A&M Records signed Styx to a contract and in 1975 the band released Equinox followed by Crystal Ball in 1976. In 1977, the band released The Grand Illusion, their seventh album, and achieved breakthrough success. The album went triple platinum and spawned the No. 8 hit single “Come Sail Away.” Styx followed up with Pieces of Eight in 1978. Cornerstone was released in 1979 and spawned the No. 1 hit single “Babe.” The band released the concept album Paradise Theatre in 1981. It peaked in the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s pop albums chart. It spawned five singles and became the fourth multi-platinum Styx album in a row. In 1983, the band released a second concept album titled Kilroy Was Here. Styx then went on hiatus but reunited in 1989. In 1990, they released Edge of the Century followed by 1999′s Brave New World, 2003′s Cyclorama and 2005′s Big Bang Theory.
