sting Biography
Sting, the English singer-songwriter, musician, philanthropist, actor and activist was born on October 2, 1951 in Wallsend, England. Before he launched his solo career, Sting was the bassist, lead singer and principal songwriter for the rock group The Police.
Throughout his career Sting has used various musical styles, incorporating elements of world beat, new age, classical, reggae and jazz into his music. Sting as a solo musician as well as The Police band member has earned sixteen Grammy Awards. His first Grammy came in 1981 when he won the Best Rock Instrumental Performance award. Sting has been inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Sting moved to London from Newcastle in 1977 and formed The Police, a New Wave band, with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. From 1978 through 1983 The Police release five albums that topped the charts and won a total of six Grammys. They released “Synchronicity,” their last album, in 1983. The Police reunited for “The Police Reunion Tour” to celebrate their 30th anniversary.
Sting released “The Dream of the Blue Turtles,” his debut solo album, in 1985. The spawned the hit singles “Fortress Around Your Heart” and “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free.” The album went triple platinum. Sting has released a total of ten studio albums, with the latest being 2010's “Symphonicities.”
