soundgarden Biography

The American rock band Soundgarden was formed in 1984 in Seattle, Washington by Chris Cornell (lead singer), Kim Thayil (lead guitarist) and Hiro Yamamoto (bassist). In 1986, Matt Cameron became Soundgarden's permanent drummer, while Ben Shepherd replaced Yamamoto as bassist in 1990.

Soundgarden was one of the leading bands that helped to create the style of music called grunge, which developed in Seattle during the 1990s. They were one of several grunge bands which signed with Sub Pop, a record label based in Seattle. Soundgarden was also the first grunge group to be signed by a major label. In 1988, the band signed with A&M records. However, commercial success was not achieved until the early 1990s when grunge became popularized by them along with Seattle contemporaries Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Nirvana.

The biggest success for Soundgarden came with the release of their album “Superunknown” in 1994. The set debuted in the No. 1 spot on Billboard's album chart and spawned their Grammy Award winning songs “Spoonman” and “Black Hole Sun.” Soundgarden disbanded in 1997 due to internal stuggles over their creative direction. In January 2010 Cornell hinted at a Soundgarden reunion. An announcement was made in April 2010 that the band would perform at the Lollapalooza festival in August 2010 in Chicago. On April 16, 2010 Soundgarden held their secret reunion concert called “Nudedragons” in Seattle at the Market's Showbox. It was the first show for Soundgarden since 1997. Currently the band has a new album in the works. It is scheduled to be released in either late 2011 or early 2012.

Soundgarden, as of 2010, has sold more than nine million U.S. records and worldwide approximately twenty one million copies.
