so you think you can dance Biography
The reality television show and American dance competition So You Think You Can Dance airs on Fox. The series premiere episode took place July 20, 2005. The premise for the show is similar to American Idol. There are nationwide auditions and series of competitions that lead to discovering America's next big star. Unlike American Idol however, the program not only showcases the talent of the dancers but also new works from cutting edge choreographers that are created for the show and dancers specifically.
Nigel Lythgoe and Simon Fuller from American Idol created the show. The producers are Dick Clark Productions and 19 Entertainment. A diverse set of contestants are selected for the show. They range from national championship winners to unknown street dancers. All contestants are required to undergo an audition process that is quite rigorous. At the end there are ten to twenty dancers left from various styles that compete on the nationally televised show. Dancers get assigned various dance styles every week in addition to different dance partners which helps test their versatility.
Cat Deeley, a former game show emcee and children's British television personality, is the host of the show. In August 2006 spin-offs of the show were announced. Currently there are versions of the program in Portugal, Australia, United Kingdom, South Africa, The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Malaysia, Poland, Greece, Germany, Canada, Israel, Turkey, the Ukraine and New Zealand.
Auditions are held in major U.S. cities each season for So You Think You Can Dance, in search of the best dancers from each city. Dancers with diverse backgrounds from various dance forms such as tap, ballet, jazz, contemporary, street dancing, hip hop, ballroom and salsa all audition for the opportunity to win the show's grand prize. In the past this has included $100,000 in cash, a Hybrid SUV, and dancing role in the Las Vegas show of Celine Dion's along with being named America's Favorite Dancer. The winners from the past seven seasons are Lauren Froderman, Russell Ferguson, Jeanine Mason, Joshua Allen, Sabra Johnson, Benji Schwimmer and Nick Lazzarini. So You Think You Can Dance has won seven Emmy Awards in total.
