slipknot Biography

The heavy metal band Slipknot was established in 1995 in Des Moines, Iowa. Founding members were Paul Gray (bassist) and Shawn Crahan (percussionist). In the band's early days there were several lineup changes. For most of their tenure Slipknot has consisted of Paul Gray, Jim Root, Corey Taylor, Sid Wilson, Shawn Crahan, Mick Thomson, Craig Jones, Joey Jordison and Chris Fehn. Paul Gray died in May 2010, leaving the band with just eight members. In 2011 Donnie Steele, a former guitarist, was Slipknot's touring bassist.

Slipknot is known for their chaotic and energetic live shows, aggressive music style and attention-grabbing images. In 1999 the band released their debut self-titled album and enjoyed immediate success. The band's popularity was further increased when "Iowa," their followup album, was released in 2001. In 2004 the band released "Vol 3: (the Subliminal Verses), their third album, and "All Hope Is Gone," their fourth album, in 2008. In addition to their studio albums, Slipknot has released four DVDs and one live album.

In 1999 the band released "Slipknot," their debut album, spawning the singles "Spit It Out" and "Wait and Bleed." They toured with Ozzfest and began to develop a large following mainly due to word of mouth and from touring. The album was certified platinum in early 2000.

In 2001 Slipknot's second album, "Iowa," was released. It peaked in the No. 3 spot on Billboard's album chart and spawned three singles: "My Plague," "Left Behind" and "The Heretic Anthem." In 2004 Slipknot released their third album "Vol 3: (The Subliminal Verse)." The album peaked in the No. 2 spot on Billboard's album chart and spawned six singles. In 2005 the band also relesed "9.0 Live," Slipknot's first live album. In 2008 Slipknot released "All Hope Is Gone," their fourth album. It debuted in the No. 1 spot on Billboard's album chart, spawning the singles "Snuff," "Sulfur," "Dead Memories," "Psychosocial" and "All Hope Is Gone." The band resumed touring in 2011.
