rush Biography
The Canadian rock band Rush was formed in Toronto, Ontario in August 1968. The band is comprised of Neil Peart, lyricist and drummer, Alex Lifeson, guitarist, and Geddy Lee, lead vocalist, keyboardist and guitarist. From 1968 to 1974, the band went through several different re-configurations before achieving their current membership when Peart replaced John Rutsey, the original drummer, in July 1974 just two week before Rush's first tour of the United States.
Since March 1974 when Rush released their self-titled debut album, the band has become renown for their complex compositions, instrumental skills, and eclectic lyrics which heavily draw on philosophy, fantasy and science fiction in addition to addressing environmental, emotional, social and humanitarian concerns.
Over the years, the music style of Rush has changed. On the band's debut album the group featured a heavy metal sound that was blues inspired, then encompassed hard rock and progressive rock as well as a period where they used synthesizers heavily. Various musical artists have cited Rush as being an influence including, The Smashing Pumpkins, Primus and Metallica in addition to the progressive metal bands Symphony X and Dream Theater.
Rush has won several Juno Awards and in 1994 became a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Over the course of their careers, Rush band members have been recognized as some of the best players of their respective instruments, winning numerous awards from magazine readers' polls. Rush has had 3 multi-platinum, 14 platinum and 24 gold records. Rush is in third place behind The Rolling Stones and Beatles for most consecutive platinum or gold studio albums from a rock band.
Recently, Rush finished the first leg on their “Time Machine Tour.” The outing ran through South and North America and wrapped up in October 2010. In Spring 2011, the band is slated to expand their tour through Europe. Rush is also working on “Clockwork Angels, their next album, which is scheduled to be released in 2011.
